Ayafe is the fourth and final piece in my collection, "You and I in Color." With the collection, I really wanted to explore how colors could show a new side of people that my previous media (charcoal and paper) just couldn't. Each piece in the collection is named after the muse in this collection because I'm trying to capture their essence and put it on canvas; surely, their name must come along for the ride. However, with the final piece, I decided to name it according to the feelings I was trying to evoke instead of the muses' names. Ayanfe means "my chosen" in Yoruba, and it's about those "you and me against the world" relationships we have in our lives. The people we've chosen to do life with, whether that's your siblings, friends turned family, or lovers. When you look at Ayanfe, I hope you think about the people in your life who have decided to stick by you, whatever comes.

Hi. My name is Lynda Charles and art helped me find myself at a point where I was asking, “what do I do with my life?” Here I am several years later, a self-taught artist drawn to creating pieces that talk about our life as human beings, and our relationship with each other. I confess that I prefer portraying the female form because I find it so much more interesting. One of my biggest goals is to make every piece I create tell an emotional story. Because of this, my media has evolved over the years from charcoal on paper to charcoal and acrylic on canvas. This is also why I prefer making large works and taking my time; I believe the smallest details, whether it’s facial expressions or shades and hues, render the most meaning. Take a minute to browse my portfolio and see if any of these stories speak to you.
