This work was inspired by The Origin of The Milky Way, by Tintoretto,a painting I have always loved. Recently a white buffalo calf was born in the prairie provinces, here in Canada. An albino buffalo, like any albino animal, is a very unusual event. The First Nations, quite correctly, consider the birth a sacred event. I too am fascinated by such important natural phenomena. I've tried to present the mystery of it in this painting. I want the calf to look surreal, vision-like.I'm also putting a swarm of blackflies around the North wind's head. I've spent too many summers in the northern woods to leave those darlings out. The 3 text sections are: Verses from Mon Pays, by Gilles Vigneault (the best & most accurate description of the Canada I know & love), references to the Aurora Borealis from Shakespeare, Milton, Dryden & Homer, and an excerpt from Dr John Rae's letter describing his search for the bodies of Franklin's crew. There are many other interesting details that I will share witht the new owners of this wonderful work. The paper itself is very thick, and difficult to work with. It is said to be the largest handmade paper in the world. I order it from Paris but I believe they get it from India. More later....
