About

I was born September 9th 1980 in Saskatoon Saskatchewan, Canada. I currently live and have a studio practice in Saskatoon. I finished my Masters of Fine Arts at the University of Saskatchewan in 2008. I have exhibited nationally and internationally, in Paris, NYC, Miami, Berlin, Toronto, Montreal, Cincinnati Barcelona and Poznan Poland.

Often large in scale, I paint and draw my own body as subject exclusively. I Utilize Neo-classical, Baroque and Renaissance styles to subvert existing stereotypic notions of maleness. I employ both scale and technique to visually subvert the often fantastical, mythic, violent male identities in these genres by inserting common-place costuming and props to juxtapose the mundane realities of contemporary life. I set up scenarios that address the theatricality of the everyday and the normalcy of desire. In using my body, often coupled and situated in various states of nudity or nakedness, I aim to also confront stereotypic notions of narcissism implicit in the homocentric gaze.
It is my intention within this work, to elevate my own lived experience and body to this state of grand presentation; revealing the domestic, solitary nature of queerness, in ways historically reserved for depictions expressing conventional male endeavour. The staged backdrops, which contain these performances both minimalistic and bordering on tableau, further reference the constructed nature of sexuality and identity. These composed dualities are designed to evoke a sense of strangeness and are at odds with each other simply because of their visually coupled existence. They address anxieties about mortality, and decay- exposing bodily vulnerability that exists regardless of one’s virility. By communicating dualities of constructed identity, i.e. the subject, and objective ideas of nobility, status, etc. mined from historic portraiture, I am interested in creating a self-anxious, self-referential queer narrative.
