About

Richard Wincer was born and raised in Worcestershire and studied at Goldsmiths College, London. After graduating in 1974 he remained in London for the next 20 years and established himself as an artist. In this period he produced sculpture, installations and site- specific work. In 1980 he showed at the Serpentine Gallery and in 1983 at the Hayward Gallery in the Sculpture Show. He has been in many group exhibitions throughout the country. Most recently he has exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy in the Summer Exhibition.
After leaving London in 1991 he settled in Yorkshire where he rediscovered his interest in rural landscape. He began painting and producing woodcuts, drawing from memories and experiences of his early life spent in Worcestershire. Often drawn to a paricular place or piece of landscape his work expresses his feelings towards that place.
His new work has seen the paintings become more abstract and more emotive. Although they still retain the feel of landscape he attempts to express feelings through form and colour. The paint handling is freer and more playful. The working practice often involves repainting canvases over and over again until they resolve themselves. Searching for the moment when things finally come together.
He believes in the truth contained in dreams and the power of the unconscious to transform and empower the creative process. Artistic creation and endeavours are an attempt to penetrate these deeper levels of the soul. The artist becomes a medium for unconscious energy and art is an attempt to represent an inner vision. The paintings are an individual's soulful journey of exploration.
A skilled woodworker and craftsman, he has recently been involved in manufacturing three sculptural benches for the newly refurbished Crucible Theatre in Sheffield earlier this year.
