Toby Zallman

About

Toby Zallman is a Chicago-based mixed-media sculptor.

Toby Zallman uses materials as metaphors to express psychological content. Their physical manifestations represent such dialectical oppositions as hard/soft, masculine/feminine, open/closed and natural/fabricated. She utilizes a wide array of materials. At times, ideas are generated by materials, but usually ideas dictate the choice of materials and working processes which include construction, wrapping, weaving and coating.

In much of her large-scale work, figuration is alluded to at several levels, from skin to guts, to body, to gesture, and in both real and metaphorical senses. Human scale is paramount, and many forms suggest anthropomorphic shapes that contrast vulnerability with a more formal ordering mechanism. This contrast of structures and textures and forms in her work is employed to suggest particular states of being and convey conceptual content.

The new work, done on computers, computer keyboards and telephones, is a continuation of that approach, now utilizing the technology as found objects and ordering devices. Outdated technology, our societys waste, become vital art materials. This tech equipment is then combined with very sensual materials. These materials include wax, tar, dirt, cement, plaster, wire, cloth, etc. These sensual, non-traditional sculpture materials provide a sharp contrast to and tension with the tech materials. The words spelled out on the keyboards act as messages about grappling with a life in both a physical and emotional way. They emerge in varying degrees of focus and clarity as psychological clues of the process. Read More
