About

Born 1957, George Air Force Base, California. Lives and works in Seattle, Washington.THE OBLIGATORY ARTIST STATEMENT

I want, need and fear people. These are the axes upon which my work turns. But I admit that my work reflects difficulty in indicating the marvelous and beautiful of people, so people must be aestheticized by my work. Still, something there is grand in humanity, or I would not make art.

With those axes, I struggle against the literal image that saturates our lives by introducing poetic elements of chance and paring some referential fat. My images are sometimes from direct observation, but they are often found or original photographs. I project upon these images my sensibilities of beauty, humor, loneliness, anger, anxiety, depression, decay, mortality. I want to be direct as a hammer. My hope is that these are conveyed with pleasing paint handling. The images are further modified by art materials mutability in an embrace of chaos and control, luck and intention: I like to gamble. For example, I use media in ways encouraging risky development, pushed to acceptance or rejection: water media on paper with aleatory flow and buckling, and etching ink mixed with alkyd and oil paints. With etching ink and oils, the resulting properties allow flow while worked upright, but the surface continues to break up while horizontal. Again, gambling. Gambling reflecting our actions and luck in life.

The best definition I know of for intuition has it as "the rich distillation of experience". I trust intuition to coordinate with these techniques and sensibilities, resulting in something better than anything done with fastidious control.
