Sarah Jane Brown lives in the heart of the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. She studied Fine Art as a mature student, although she had been painting for more than 20 years. Specialising in Painting at the West Wales School of the Arts, she was awarded ‘Student of the Year’ and graduated with a First Class Honours Degree. She has since exhibited widely and her work is now held in many private collections across the UK and overseas.
Painting for Sarah Jane is an intimate way of expressing both herself and her environment. She often incorporates elements of drawing, and photography into her preliminary practise; these are ways of embedding the landscape into her 'mind’s eye' and to work out ideas for painting. Work is then built up in layers, combinations of thin glazes with thick impasto. Often she also includes ‘sfumato’, (subtle blending) to produce an atmospheric effect. This variety of techniques allows her to imbue the work with a personal feeling for light, space, and elemental forces, as well as a sense of intimacy and wonder and a range of other emotions that the experience of landscape can unleash.
‘The coastal landscape near my home in Pembrokeshire is source material for my work, however my approach to painting is largely introspective; it’s more about how being in the landscape makes me feel.
I walk, photograph, sketch and make painted studies. In the studio these observations are transformed, becoming more loose and expressive as I engage with the physicality of painting, sometimes verging into abstraction.
This physicality, echoes (in a very personal way) the sensations of being in the landscape; sometimes calm, restorative, or spiritually uplifting; at other times wild, dynamic, & mentally energising. The fluid, gestural nature of paint is also responsive to these thoughts and feelings.
The titles are phrases that cross my mind whilst I am out in the landscape; excerpts from poetry, remembered conversations, or just snippets of my own thoughts.’
