Born in Ketrzyn, Poland in 1965, Jarek Puczel received his MA from the University of Warsaw in 1990. His paintings have been exhibited across Europe and the United States. He approaches his work with the idea that life is a movie or a game of illusion and the world is a playground where different realities play with one another. His paintings tend to juxtapose realism with abstraction in two representative layers. The first layer often consists of grayscale on canvas and represents the well-known and established experiences of day to day life. The next layer of colorful elements, which sometimes serve to "white out" the grayscale beneath it, represent vivid thoughts and feelings that lead to new, more free actions. His paintings serve as a reminder that life can be light and fun. There is the feeling that the people depicted in his work belong to something bigger with profound energy, and Puczel paints along the precarious edge between what is rational and what is only intuitive.
