Sabin Aell

About

Sabin Aell is an international award-winning artist and designer. Born and raised in Austria, her work has been shown in Berlin, London, Seoul, Adelaide, Stockholm, and Vienna, among others. Her media as an artist ranges from photography to installation, from mixed media to film.

After living in Linz, Vienna, and Frankfurt, Sabin Aell moved to Denver in 2006. Early in 2008 she opened Hinterland, an art event space, where she curates and exhibits adventurous contemporary art. As a designer her work reaches back to an intense career as a multimedia designer. During the last 10 years she has expanded her experience into product and interior design, and in 2009 she founded her art and design firm, Subsequently Now Productions.

Last year, Aell’s primary focus was on installation work, which she exhibited in two shows at the Biennial of the Americas 2010. One of them, „Objectophelia“, curated by Lauri Lynnxe Murphy, took place in partnership with the MCA, Denver.

Aell’s work involves many different layers of spiritual and emotional aspects upon which our individual realties are based. By using strange materials in a unexpected context, she fuses together apparently unrelated elements. Opposing energies form alliances and tell you stories. It is a fervent play with concealed meaning and a language other than words. Through her work she expresses beauty where beauty is not expected.

New and old technologies, the endless stream of various materials compliment each other in her work. Her adept handling of different textures and substances tease and lure the observer into an exciting world. Once there you feel like airy molecules are floating around, waiting to be touched, played with and metamorphosing into something else. Her work emits the impression of a promise, a promise that any desire can be drawn into a physical experience, if you only focus upon it.
