About

I was born in Iran and left my native country prior to the Islamic revolution. I studied welding at the Sculpture Center and received a B.F.A in painting from Parsons School of Design. I have been awarded residencies from Henry Street Settlement, Makor gallery and participated in the Viewing program at The Drawing Center. I was nominated for the 2009 Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize and
had numerous exhibitions, including the Asian Contemporary Art fair, Scope Miami Art fair, LTMH Gallery, Thomas Jaeckel Gallery, College of New Jersey, Current gallery, Abrons art Center, Makor Gallery, Ernest Rubenstein Gallery, BWAC and 450 Broadway Gallery. I currently live with my family in New York City and work as a sculptor, painter, calligrapher and a teaching artist.

As a female born in Iran, I grew up in a tradition that embraced a distorted sense of reality. Well defined social and political, sexual and religious parameters that were obscured by previous generations, became our compromised identity. It led me to believe that beneath the surface lies something powerful that needed exposure.

My inspiration comes from the natural rhythms and patterns in nature and the inner body. Through elements of humor and violence I explore issues of identity, power, isolation and decay. I'm intrigued by the meditative process of melting metal and use steel exclusively to enhance the existential themes in my sculptures. Welding on several pieces at a time, my process intuitive and deliberate, is cutting, bending, tearing, carving, hammering and recombining parts in unexpected ways. The process also becomes a metaphor that symbolizes my desire to reshape and redefine my early culture.
