About

I am an artist who primarily uses photography. I hang sheets of photo paper, selectively apply chemicals and project negatives at them. I often write my way to an image or series. The poetry becomes an emotional template for reference while I work on the images. I think photography can get bogged down in looking for technical perfection, particularly in black and white images. I see that as being stuck in a student phase of creation. It is important to know and utilize those principles but I think they should guide from the background. I use what I know about making a dynamic drawing to determine the effectiveness of my images rather than the rules of monochrome photography. Those lessons have formed over thousands of years and are far more responsive to the needs of the human eye. I try to keep my vision big and to continually look for unexplored avenues. Darkroom practice stifled itself in technical introspection then later through disuse and has struggled to attain significant new expressions. I'm heavily influenced by painting and contemporary poetry, and the darkroom is where I go to advance those ideas. I explore my internal vision drawing on all people I have met, heaven, hell, and the sublime joy of the profligate world.
I am a fourth generation artist. I had my first formal art training at age nine and began working in the darkroom 44 years ago at age twelve. I am involved with the Centre for Contemporary Arts Afghanistan. I have several humanitarian projects that I work on in Afghanistan. When I am not making art I read and write extensively. I use my writing to form an emotional template for my reference as I work on a series of images. My first exhibit was at fourteen and then occasionally until 2000 when I began to exhibit regularly.
