About

In 2005, the centenary year of Einstein's theory of special relativity, I began to look for a way that art and science could communicate. By November 2006 I invented the art of Colour-field splash and related it to the String theory, often referred to by physicists as the theory of everything. The splitting lines of colour-field splash are at the heart of String theory, the theory of everything. ************************** ************************* *************TO SEE A GROUND BREAKING VIDEO OF A "STRING THEORY AND COLOUR-FIELD SPLASH" PAINTING BEING CREATED VISIT YOUTUBE AT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Huuf5HJLQVs ************************ *************************Artist statement ammended: 1st July 2009. Colour-field splash builds on Abstract Expressionism, in particular the work of Barnett Newman, and Lucio Fontana. Both artists sought to free themselves from the restrictions of a two-dimensional painted surface. They endeavoured to extend the meaning of the painted surface beyond the pictorial representation and convention of easel painting and to incorporate on the canvas surface a route into another dimension. Newmans Zips and Fontanas Tagli or Cuts now give way to Strings with symmetric Splits truly reflecting the nature of the elementary particles which make up our universe. The actual forming of the strings in my paintings uniquely incorporates a time dimension. The string and its symmetric division unfold as a developing World line. The energetic stream of paint is launched from above the canvas surface. This string of paint splits and reforms during its passage and then falls tothe canvas where its progress over time is faithfully recorded. It is this effect, seen for the first time in my paintings, which reflects the very heart of String Theory where vibrating and symmetrically dividing strings are the elementary particles of all the Universe.Artist statement: 3rd September 2008Aesthetics and theoretical physics hit it off in my "Colour-field Splash" paintings. It uses canvas and paint but no brush strokes. First several coats of a single colour are absorbed into the weave of the canvas to produce a tranquil base. The tranquillity is then disturbed by a splash of paint. At some points the high velocity of the paint causes it to split symmetrically on the canvas to produce a unique and beautiful effect. It is through this splitting of the splash that the observer is sucked into the multiple dimensions of the cosmological space beyond. The oscillating paint splits symmetrically on the canvas to create a totally original effect never seen before in the field of painting.Colour-field splash builds on Abstract Expressionism, in particular the work of Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock and Lucio Fontana. All three of these artists sought to free themselves from the restrictions of a two-dimensional painted surface and to extend the vocabulary of painting beyond the pictorial representation and convention of easel painting. Newmans Zips and Fontanas Tagli or Cuts now give way to symmetric Splits truly reflecting the nature of the universe.Scientifically the action takes place on a manifold called the Riemann sphere, a sphere so large that the curved surface becomes flat (like walking on the surface of the Earth but in effect at the edge of the universe). The splashes of paint are Strings and the symmetric split is a Hyperfunction where the split is between the positive and the negative. Through the portal of the split we can delve into the furthest regions of space, helped in our journey by either String or Twistor theory. The paintings are a unique demonstration of the conditions under which the Cauchy-Riemann equations work on a real two-dimensional manifold. Under the conditions given by these equations a vibrating function would exhibit the same effects that a holomorphic function does in the complex plane. The Split produced by the vibrating Splash is the elementary string particle at the beginning of time. Read More

Education
I am a Physics graduate and was teaching maths until 1987. I studied painting, print-making and sculpture in London at the Working Men's College from 1982 to 1987. From 1987 to 2005 I exhibited and sold my work in Covent Garden, London, at my OXO Tower studio by the River Thames and on my own website., Read More
