I am attracted to objects which are weathered and show signs of wear and tear, erosion and history.
I try to reproduce weathering and the beauty of decay in my work by using paper, plaster, canvas which I tear, scorch, layer and pin, creating rough edges and depth of texture.
My work is strong, simple and quirky – most of it with neutral tones and a little colour, preferring to use texture to produce the art, rather than colour and form.
I try to magnify a part of something I find eye-catching. In most cases it is a piece of something ageing or weathered…. a wall, a cracked bit of wood, or rusty metal.
My work is just a small section of what I see. I see the bigger picture by focusing on the smaller picture.
My inspiration comes from my childhood living on the tiny sun baked island of Bahrain in the Middle East, where most everything eventually cracked, weathered, shriveled or faded in the constant heat, sun, humidity and sand storms.
I now live in Cowbridge, a beautiful market town in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, where I continue to be inspired by the craggy South Wales coastline and magnificent Vale countryside.
