I believe that both art and film can provoke strong reactions and create a desire to step back and understand what is set out before them; both are accessible to everyone and always open to new interpretation.
My work is greatly influenced by artists such as Peter Blake, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein and, much like Blake, I too want to make art that is universal and that creates ‘the visual equivalent of pop music.’
It is these ideals that form the basis of my work. Each visual interpretation is a collage of images from vintage magazines, film posters, photos of iconic celebrities and historic paintings by the Masters which form a dialogue and create a final piece which is both nostalgic and whimsical, humorous and fascinating. Favouring both icons and iconic images as subject matter the work will be created with hard edged, precise compositions that parody their origins and create a sense of the familiar, with a lighthearted and welcoming manner.
Working from found and collected images, from various sources such as films, documentaries and old photo albums, I use the process of painting as a means to elevate the importance and relevance of what may otherwise be forgotten or ignored.The source material is important as it dispenses with my involvement with a known/familiar subject and is replaced with a response to my subjects photographed appearance.
