About

My work is rooted in an obscure childhood, inspired by my mother. An obsession with collecting stems from years of playing on my own on a rubbish dump watching her accumulate, sort and meticulous arrange endless amounts of other people’s dumped possessions, forgotten memories and abandoned lives. Here I would create imaginary worlds… and poke wildlife.

I am repulsed by waste, epically the waste of life. After some strange animal related incidents I taught myself a form of taxidermy, saving and recycling the seemingly useless and unwanted, transforming them into emotive and provocative assemblages- Twisting the natural with artificial, where beauty and death collide with nostalgia, dark humor and borderline insanity.

I turned parts of my creative process into a live taxidermy performance, bringing this seemingly dark art to the stage for the first time with

'D.I.Y Taxidermy - LIVE'
'A cross between the shopping channel and Blue Peter' where the audience are encouraged to participate and generally be involved in every aspect of the creation of this new artwork. This show gives people a unique insight into the mind of an artist.

My artwork has appeared on the cover of DESIGN WEEK, inside TIME OUT, THE INDEPENDENT, NOTION and BIZARRE MAGAZINE. She has worked with DIESEL, BBC FILM, FILM LONDON, SECRET CINEMA and created the set design for a semi finalist of the PLACE PRIZE, the biggest contemporary dance award in Britain.
Born in Dorset, after graduating with a degree in Sculpture from Camberwell College of Arts, I now live and work in London

MAY: Artist Talk Brighton Fashion Week

Creator of:
D.I.Y TAXIDERMY:
A live demonstration, performance & artist talk all rolled into one.

'A bit like a science lesson from a substitute teacher...who is really an artist.'

In about an hour Gates talks an audience through her D.I.Y process (emphasis is heavily on the D.I.Y aspect). Delivered in a 'shopping channel' style, She gives you handy hints & tips for using basic everyday objects, where to source animal parts legally & personal preservation methods, giving a unique insight into this seemingly dark art and mind of an artist. The audience is encouraged to participate and generally be involved in the creation of a new artwork.
