Lolita Timofeeva was born in Riga (Latvia). She began her studies at Technical Institute of Riga (design path) and continued her training at the Academy of Fine Arts of Riga. She completed her studies at the Design Academy, first in St. Petersburg and then in Moscow. She has been living in Italy since 1991.
The artist participated in many solo and group exhibitions both in public spaces and private galleries throughout Europe. She was the main artist featured in museums such as the Museum het Paleis (The Hague, The Netherlands), the Museo Casal Solleric (Palma de Mallorca/Spain), the Foreign Art Museum (Riga, Latvia), the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche (Faenza, Italy), etc.
In 1997 she was chosen to represent Latvia with a solo show at the 47th Venice Biennale.
The list of critics and intellectuals who have written about her work includes: Janus, Giorgio di Genova, Pierre Restany, Mario Luzi (whose collection of poems she illustrated), Antonio Paolucci, Bigas Luna, Marcel Paquet, Giorgio Celli, Lino Cavallari, Maurizio Vanni, Arturo Achwarz and many others.
Her works are on display in museums and private collections all over the world, such as at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection (Madrid), the Museo Casal Solleric (Palma de Mallorca), the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche (Faenza), Foreign Art Museum (Riga/Latvia), Collezione Arturo Schwarz (Milan) etc.
Lolita Timofeeva investigates the metaphysical dimension of the world, her poetics draw from the area of symbols and archetypes. The artist uses different media to express herself, such as painting and sculpture, video and installation art. In 2000 she made the short “Kamajuandon”.
