Marian Williams, born in Rotterdam, is a self-taught collage artist, living and working in France.
Using only authentic photos and illustrations from vintage and modern magazines and books, she creates dynamic, striking, colourful collages.
Classical art, retro chic and kitsch are combined in a challenging way she calls 'The Art of Inferior Decoration'.
Her first collage art exhibition in France took place in April 2011, since then she has been exhibited internationally.
Her works are compositions of original illustrations from books and magazines dating from 1900 till today.
The early compositions are created with exclusively paper, lately combined with both acrylic and oil paint.
'As long as I can remember I've been collecting images to cut and paste.
I love to work with old magazines which reflect the history of daily life.
Collage for me is story telling; transforming images that are charged with concepts and ideas into new compositions.
I try to create harmony and movement in each work playing with space, light, color and a sense of humor.'
Her latest works:
'Life is not still and we all move on. I'm moving on on as well... exploring different materials and dimensions;
moving from paper to canvas, adding oil paint and acrylic paint techniques.
It was a real challenge to break the standard small format of collage and work on bigger formats.
Finding harmony and movement in my compositions is still my goal.
Lately I've been trying to reach that with as little accentuations as possible.'…Read More
