I have been living and working as an Artist in Shropshire for the past ten years. My work is based on landscape - the landscape we experience.
Outside is a set of continual shapes or patterns that alter when other factors come into play. They are all reacting to each other creating movement and change as we also move and change too.
I have tried to cross the visual experience of landscape and its tactile nature. With my fascination for shapes and how they stimulate the eye I wanted to find ways to show movement and change in large groups of shapes such as a field of wheat or in single objects such as a tree (which consisted of multiple shapes), on the canvas.
I used photographs and cut-paper shapes to understand how large areas of complicated pattern could be broken down to create a simpler language. Large areas or single objects such as: grass, trees, fields and plants enabled me to gather certain types of information: colour, shape, rhythms and patterns. I try to translate these multiples into the final image to create an experience of landscape not a replica of it.
My first attempt at conveying movement was creating a structure that would hold together many pieces. I tried using the canvas as a writing pad; just getting the information down in a line from one end of the canvas to the other. Patterns and shapes and line created rhythms and texture across the canvas. I liked the idea that pattern could be used to interpret landscape and how line, pattern and shapes could create a tactile property that was seen in nature form on the canvas.
Using these elements, I started to construct the painting to a simpler format. I found I was no longer relying on the subject matter, I was only concerned with how the patterns and shapes were starting to engage my mind on a purely aesthetic level.
By looking at Middle Eastern designs and the use of pattern in mosques and furnishing. I noticed how overwhelming pattern could become when embraced purely by itself and used in different scales and environments.Landscape itself has pattern, holds qualities of structure, shapes that create rhythms and balance. These elements can be repeated, reflected and manipulated to a greater or lesser degree. …Read More
