Andrew James Field is known for his highly individual and dramatic mixed media and oil paintings based on landscapes experienced mainly in the UK and living in the United Arab Emirates. He has lived and worked in Abu Dhabi for six years and is an active supporter of promoting the arts through exhibitions, workshops and teaching.

Born in 1979 in Birmingham he graduated from Lancaster University with a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art and Geography in 2001. Andrew was awarded a scholarship in recognition of his achievement and contribution to the Art Faculty. His large award-winning canvases were exhibited at the university for three years.

His interest lies with the physical geography of the landscape and in particular how, through weathering, areas are continually changing, due to erosion. The rhythms and motions and chaotic upsurges caused by the shift of people, climate and time are reflected, using expressive brush strokes, releasing the energy he feels when immersed within the landscape. The atmospheric qualities within the works are as a result of attempting to capture the dazzling display of intense light that rises out of the sea and drowns the shoreline. Andrew paints in an instinctive way, interpreting the force of nature. He works and reworks areas as if sediment is being deposited then eroded, scratched, scraped, up to the point where the fluidity of the landscape flows across the canvas, texturing each composition until it reads like Braille.

Andrew’s work embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques. He prefers to work using the traditional plein-air approach so that he can experience the landscapes first hand. Whether he is on the banks of the River Avon in Warwickshire or concealed under a palm tree within an oasis of the UAE or battling with the shamal on Saadiyat Island he has the ability to communicate an impression of the physical surroundings in the context of the weather conditions and the personal emotions he experiences whilst consumed by the natural environment he feels inspired to convey.

Andrew’s work has been influenced by the Abstract Expressionists including Jackson Pollock, Willem De Kooning, Mark Rothko and the Modern British artists working after the 2nd World War in the artists’ colony of St Ives in Cornwall, such as Peter Lanyon and Patrick Heron. Joseph Mallord William Turner RA, arguably Britain’s greatest landscape painter, has had a tremendous impact on Andrew’s work, especially when using watercolour and utilising some of the techniques used by Turner, to build complex compositions based on the elements found within the landscapes.
