Maria Es born in 1949 in Itteren-Maastricht (NL), lives and works in Berlin and Amsterdam.
Itteren, back then a small village located in the riverbed of the Maes, now a part of the district of Maastricht. The farm landscape, the pristine nature and the multiple floods of the Maes defines her evolution as a woman and as an artist later on. Fascinated by the phenomenon Fertility and Ephemerality she has deepened her search in the predestination of the ‘female’ existence. A search for the identity of the female energy.
Painting/drawing – graffiti - digital process art – art projects – spatial installations – portrait and work in commission.
The art of Maria Es is complex and not easy to define. Her work goes into the deeper layers of the perception. Her paintings and installations are witnesses of a searching, restless and excessive game of identity, were multiple style changes play an important part.
Course of life
ONYVA-female
In 1996 the ONYVA-female arises from one of her paintings (self portrait ‘Maria’ from 1996).
She becomes the central theme in the work of Maria Es.
The ONYVA-female is the ‘going energy’. She is the name for the energy moving between fertility and ephemerality.
New archetype
The ONYVA-Female - an aggregation of the French word on y va (they go) is the new female archetype in the visual art. She is capable of innovating herself completely without ending in total anarchy and loss of her own. Not the ratio but an inner intuition defines where to go. Curiosity, Courage and Will power are the only terms.
