Our roles and duties as women are deeply ingrained in us, generation after generation. Our identities and validations, often defined by others, leave us with inner conflicts. Our mothers and grandmothers perpetuate definitions of us as women that are created by society and religion, and justify their own roles and activities based on these expectations. We function in a world where women adjust their aspirations to match traditional ideals or strive to achieve perfection in traditional roles coupled with professional working responsibilities. My work examines these dilemmas: the feminine character defined through beauty, clothing, social conduct and religion; the stereotypical roles we assume as mothers, caretakers and professionals; and the myriad of consequences we face as a result.
The medium I use for an individual work of art is thoughtfully chosen for each piece.
Whether it be through paintings, drawings, installations or performance, I aim for an awareness of how women have been defined in the past and the insight this knowledge gives us as we move forward.
