I grew up in South Somerset and moved to London in 1994 to obtain my BA (Hons) in Art History and English Literature at Goldsmiths College. After periods working at both the National Gallery and the Tate Gallery, I returned to Goldsmiths to obtain my Post Graduate Certificate of Education to become an art teacher. I returned to Somerset in 2003 and now live in Glastonbury and work as a full-time artist.

What inspires me to work is my passion for form and colour. I have always loved to draw and I see beautiful form in everything around me. My work is instinctive, but I always have some kind of formal starting point or structure in my mind before I begin. I consider my work to be abstract, but sometimes it can also border on the surreal, especially when starting points come from my dreamscape – characters and landscapes can begin to appear. I give my work loosely descriptive titles after I have painted them, but firmly believe that the content is in the eye of the beholder, and after I have finished the painting and am looking at the content, I am just one of many ‘beholders’.

I love every movement and moment in art, but clearly my influences come from the Twentieth Century. I love Matisse and Picasso for their form, American Abstract Expressionism for its depth and colour, Ben Nicholson for his flat planes, Andre Masson for his use of line, Marcel Duchamp for his humour… and the list goes on!
