Peter Matthews was born in Zimbabwe in 1955 and moved to South Africa to study Graphic Design.
He became a South African citizen and went on to build a succesful advertising agency, Matthews & Charter, Ogilvy. Rated one of the most creative agencies in South Africa by the Financial Mail.
Peter Sold his shares in the agency in 2000 to focus on his passion - Art.
Peter creates original and compelling works of art and is inspired by the beauty of the human form, human emotion and the human spirit. His preferred mediums are oil, charcoal and pencil.

In addition to being an artist, he is one of South Africa's most respected film and commercials director's. He has conceptualized and directed many of his own commercials that have received international award recognition. During his time as partner and creative head of Matthews & Charter, Ogilvy & Mather ad agency, Peter developed a passion for story-telling and directing commercials. After selling out his shares in the company to Ogilvy, Peter directed multinational brand commercials. Peters creative ability and directing talent won him a Vuka award for writing and directing the Alzheimers Dont Forget ad, which was also a finalist at Cannes 2004. In 2006-2007, Peter directed the international award-winning feature film, Oil on Water, in which his own works of art were featured. Peter is also a recognized South African artist, having exhibited his work both locally and internationally. In 2000 Peter produced a series of artworks for his first solo art exhibition in Durban, South Africa. The following year, he held a sell out international art exhibition in Germany where twelve paintings, (21 on exhibit) were sold on the opening night. He has produced the illustrations for a South African Childrens Book series, Animal Adventures in Africa and was also the artist responsible for the production of the paintings in the internationally acclaimed feature film, Oil on Water.
