“It is on the whole probable that we continually dream, but that consciousness makes such a noise that we do not hear it.” Carl Jung
I approach painting with a sense of concentrated playfulness. Choosing at random something that grabs my attention as a starting point, chance and free correlation are then relied upon to construct the picture, motivated by a desire to subvert the conscious mind.
Exploring the legacy of Dada and Automatism, there is no preconception about which direction the paint, with all its slippages, will go. I adopt the role of observer and become a tourist inside my own head, translating instinctive reactions into gestures and textures on the surface, only stepping back at the point of resolution to assess what the painting might be trying to say.
