ARTIST'S STATEMENT

''I grew up on the west coast of Cumbria and have always been impressed by the bleak beauty and remarkable light there. My father inspired me with a love of drawing when I was 3 or 4 years old; he was a gifted draftsman who worked all his life in the design department of a big engineering company.

My pictures are often inspired by a found image – such as an old family snap shot – which act as 'triggers' in the development of each work.

My latest series of pictures – 'Empty Skies' – is ‘an examination of memory’ (memories of childhood). With each picture I have translated and interpreted the original 'source image' by putting plenty of space and fresh air into the compositions and emphasising only what is important to me. The results are often characterized by a mood of 'uneasy stillness'.

I find my inspiration from the work of very painterly artists such as Turner and Goya, as well as 'photo inspired' artists like Luc Tuyman, Elizabeth Peyton and Peter Doig.''
