About

2012 Threadneedle Prize finalist David Storey's work is about figures and faces, 'glimpsed' or half-remembered, and quite a few are concerned with childhood, or to be more precise with memories of childhood. "I keep the use of brushes to a minimum preferring to use rags, palette knives and my fingers instead. This means that figures often require several re-workings until they feel right".

David's paintings have featured in numerous exhibitions, including the final of last year's Threadneedle Prize at The Mall Galleries in London, the 2012 Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and recent shows at: Cultivate, Vyner Street Gallery, The Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, and The Gallery in Cork Street. In 2011 David appeared on the BBC2 arts program 'Show Me the Monet' discussing his painting 'Blue Room'.

A select number of paintings and prints by David are available for sale with The Art Collective Gallery at the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead, stand C3 (13 - 16 June).

David Storey is represented in the UK by Thomas and Paul Contemporary Art.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

UNEASY DREAMS

"I love to paint in a bold, expressionistic way. My work is about figures and faces, 'glimpsed' or half-remembered, and quite a few are concerned with childhood, or to be more precise with memories of childhood. Twenty years ago I found a photograph of a husband and wife frozen in a moment of awkwardness, the atmosphere in the photo really interested meand this feeling of 'uneasy tranquillity' has been a feature of my work ever since (see 'Blue Room').

I keep the use of brushes to a minimum preferring to use rags, palette knives and my fingers instead. Consequently figures often require several re-workings until they feel right. This approach also seems to give the pictures a sort of nervous energy.

I enjoy working from life when I get the chance and a commitment to good draughtsmanship is central to my practice."
