From 2003 2006 I had been pursuing a body of work focused on the war in Iraq. Although I was opposed to the war from the outset, my works were never intended to be mere anti-war pieces. In addition, they address broader human issues of conflicting notions of absolute truth that, throughout history have inevitably fueled division and violent conflict. Instead of making mere political statements, I wanted to speak of this historical human failure, where ideas of the good and right often take a turn for the worse and result in campaigns plagued with inequities. Another facet of my work strives to subvert the ephemeral, temporary nature of my source images, our sense of distance and detachment as viewers, and our ever declining attention span. My aim was to use the images I had gathered in a way that would take them out of the ephemeral printed page and elevate them to a more amplified, permanent context. Read More
