My main practice is painting using watercolour on handmade Japanese papers. I have developed a unique way to work with these papers and as the paintings have evolved and deepened a number of themes can be seen running through the work:
Weaving
The techniques used give the paintings an allusion to woven and knitted textiles, to braids and twine. The metaphor of weaving, knitting, warp and weft is further explored and reflects my interest in and deep respect not only for traditional textile crafts, but also for ideas that explore the unity of all things
Meditation
There is a balance between the free-flowing gestural applications of paint and the structured borders and patterns. The calmness of the paintings allows the viewer to engage in contemplation of the work, to discover the play between the under-the -surface movements, the many-layered washes and the surface paint.
