About

My work probes the notion of 'The Clearing' - where wilderness and chaos oppose civilization and order, and where we feel at our most safe yet most vulnerable: stray too close to the edge and the forest may snatch you into its depths. Fading interiors and liminal landscapes hover at the edges of this symbolic Clearing, alluding to the English ‘Gothic’ of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Oil paintings and drawings use shifts in scale to evoke an uncertain world in which the uncanny can coexist with the mundane, and where the possibility of confronting what has been repressed may generate at once feelings of creeping malevolence or whimsical curiosity.

Winner of the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2005. Shortlisted for the Catlin Prize, 2011.
Works held in The Saatchi Collection, All Visual Arts, and The Newhall Art Collection, Cambridge.
Education
Royal Academy Schools, London, PG Dip Fine Art; Wimbledon College of Art, BA (Hons) Painting; Courtauld Institute of Art, MA History of Art; Cambridge University, BA (Hons) History of Art.
