Tony Vazquez (Javaroa) decidedly uses in his work a resource that art has assumed as part of its crucial redefinition from the second half of the twentieth century: the rupestrian traces of a casual exchange society.
In Vazquez, the intention is extreme in the background collages made as a precondition of an extended segment of his work; yet, this "background" does not act as a "second plane” in the conventional sense, but as a game of successive glazes of borrowed paper that become neuralgic, pre-eminent, to the meaning and to the construct of a discourse that is inherited from The Pop spirit.
Here, the almost chaotic encounter between disparate fragments and layered trimmings are intended to be solved, like some kind of puzzle, by the subtle imposition of drawings: by lines of "stitching" that unite events with no apparent connection; events that have been snatched away form their original sources. Objects and other somewhat trivial images of a Culture that emphasizes trade loom in the stratum, and although technically serving as an anterior plane, these images often only manage to be in the viewer's consciousness afterwards… a posteriori, when the attention to the visual strength yields to the natural instinct to break off everything and go to the details. This act of deconstruction, of looking at the art piece from far and from up close; from the whole to its sections and pieces, create a myriad of readings, interpretations, and connections that open the space for a discussion on the intellectual and emotional stand of the post-modern human.
This transposition of planes and directions, of parts and wholes, of lines, and of “consumer images” is consubstantial to a work that, based in principles of artistic manifestos that dismiss the very value of originality per se, contribute, within its own paradox, to labor an extremely personal space in the territory of the present generation of art.
