Ilya Volykhine was born in Russia 1967, emigrated to NYC in 1990 and showed there for 10 years before moving to Australia in 2000 and becoming a citizen. Volykhine has held several solo and group exhibitions in the USA & Australia, namely the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Blake Prize for Religious Art, the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award, the Mosman Prize, and most recently the Walker & Hall Art Award. His artwork falls into the contemporary neo-expressionist genre. A strife-filled background in the USSR during the 60's, 70's and 80's has had a strong impact on both the artist and his work. His paintings are figurative, allowing both memory and imagination to work together as the major influences in his narratives. His works have an intuitive and raw sensibility, with a dreamlike intermingling of colour, imagination and personal cultural history. They also possess a somewhat haunting quality, stemming in part from his unique technique and idiosyncratic use of imagery. He is widely collected internationally and is a full time artist. His next solo exhibition will take place in November of 2012 in Auckland, New Zealand.…Read More
