About

I strive for simplicity and formal reduction in my works. Issues concerning the number of elements in a set, oneness, unity and division, relations between single and multiple, and the parts to the whole—these are the subjects of my works visualized through structure, shape, measurement, planar and spatial relationships. I use geometric processes, such as mirror symmetry, rotation and shifting, where variable rhythmical structures and playfulness can appear.

In order to achieve a surface I completely cover the canvas with “paintwelts,” or textured lines or systems of lines. These create shapes that rise from the plane of the canvas, bringing sheen, consistency and physical properties of paint to the foreground. A vibrating optical effect comes from the shifting of light on the top of the paintwelts and the shadows it casts. Areas shaped by different groups of lines alternate between foreground and background, generating a unique experience in each artwork. By varying one’s viewpoint, different visual components become prominent, so one can even experience an illusory drift.
