Los Angeles based visual artist, curator, coordinator and self-proclaimed tratist. I am currently working on a long term multidisciplinary educational program. Much more in-the-works!
Eric Wong is a Los Angeles based multidisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited in numerous contextual, alternative, public spaces and galleries. His work is in many private collections. He was born in the Los Angeles district of Silverlake, CA in 1970. He moved to San Diego, CA in 1979 and lived there for many years. In the mid eighties he discovered the punk scene, which set the stage for a very abrasive and dynamic path. At an early age he was exposed to mature social and human issues of which he was compelled to confront. This adopted subculture provided him with a means of expressing thoughts and feelings not commonly accepted or even allowed at the time. His experiences with racism as a young Chinese, Scottish, Irish, American made it a fluid transition into this newfound alienation. A subculture that had no particular ties other than a fellowship of conflict, diatribe, disdain, creativity, dialogue and music was the adhesive. He felt a sense of freedom and empowerment in this unorganized movement that considered ideas outside of the box. During this time Wong began to write poetry, prose, lyric and short essays. Which included a self-published fanzine Tales from the Positive Side. He painted and designed leather jackets and other very conceptual accessories. His ideas and concerns at this time unfortunately seemed to evoke a great deal of aggression and even violent response.
In the late eighties/early nineties he enrolled at San Diego City College without commitment to a major. Here he studied painting and life drawing for many years with artist Debra Babylon. Wong took obsessive numbers of studio, social/political science, literature and philosophy at other community colleges prior to attending Art School. He then majored in Painting/New Genres at the San Francisco Art Institute, Sculpture/New Genres at Otis College of Art & Design and Fine Art Painting at the Art Institute of Southern California, Laguna.
Eric Wong has developed a body of work in painting, drawing, constructs, writing, video, social sculpture, installation and as a curator. In his work Wong explores automatism, conceptual art and process based practices. Something he often refers to as tra(the why that precedes the what). He is concerned with issues of intentions or his origin of individual purpose for a creative action, resulting image and/or object. Wong is above all drawn to painting, color, scrawl and non-objective abstraction.
Eric Wong has organized numerous Expositions and Educational Projects that are important extensions of his work as an artist. He has exhibited and collaborated with hundreds of artists, critics, organizations and creative individuals both nationally and internationally.…Read More
