I am a Brooklyn based painter.I was born in Frankfurt, Germany (army brat). My family moved to the USA, and I grew up in the deep South--Louisiana. After art school in Chicago, I received a fellowship to the Skowhegan, after which, I moved to Brooklyn, where I live today. As a kid I developed the habit of prowling though thrift stores and flea markets, with my dad (a collector of unusual castoffs) looking for interesting items, ephemera and relics of the past.More recently, my art making has involved collecting photos(1970s and 80s era) of people I dont know, and making paintings about these folks. It is my goal to find and reveal hints of personalities and expressions of intimacy that hide in the found photos (which initially seem posed and superficial). My paintings zoom in on the photos details recording the subtle moments --the touch of hands, a loving gaze
My current project is the “Blue Screen Series.”
This series consists of paintings and a painting installation, “Galactic Miami,” composed of 99 individual portraits.These paintings and installation reference photos I found on the wall of a Miami pizzeria—shots of the workers after hours. The vivid ultramarine blue of the paintings suggests not only the tropical Miami environment, but also the blue screens of film making, where figures are shot and extracted from an environments pictorially.
