Historical context breathes life into the modern urban setting. As the urban environment evolves, the significance of the historical context becomes blockaded by commercial design, utilitarian functions or simply neglect. The charm and historical significance of a neighborhood can become overgrown with contemporary façade and lose its authenticity.
My work undulates between recording historical narrative and showcasing contemporary movement—as if collapsing a cross-section of time in a particular place. For each project, I challenge myself to present my audience with a unique view of their habitat. Each viewer, who is most likely a participant in the contemporary urban narrative, brings a unique understanding of the location. The result is fluid conglomerate of knowledge focused through a lens I provide. What is commonly perceived as fact suddenly comes under scrutiny and new truths are born from guided story telling.
My goal is for the viewer to come to a new awareness of his environment. By using familiar elements and local symbology, the viewer can immediately relate to my work.
