Carmen Larsen

About

b i o g r a p h y

Carmen Larsen was born in the coastal city of East London, South Africa in 1982. When she was 14 years old she immigrated with her family to Vancouver Canada, where she now works from her East Vancouver studio. Carmen has been producing and exhibiting her work in Canada, Europe, and the UK over the last decade, meeting many private collectors, influencial Artists and inspirational muses along the way.

Carmen is an Artist whose technique and process is self taught, developed through years of experimental studies and studio hibernations. From the time that Carmen learned to walk and talk, Art entered her life as naturally as any other daily necessity. Painting and drawing are not only her passion, but her preferred method of communication. Although as a child her work began with oil still-life, portraiture and detailed pencil sketches, Carmen soon found her voice in “abstract” expression. Achieving results through unconventional methods and a belief in absolute freedom.

Her work as an Artist is heavily inspired by her ongoing fascination with ancient studies, the theory of collective conscious, elements of nature, abstraction, transformation and rebirthing of objects and materials; a common reoccurrence with her work in any medium. Carmen’s paintings consist of many detailed layers of organic textures, pigments and tar gels, creating visual depth. The natural element of water is a vital medium in her process, allowing flow and movement in the creation of each piece. Dripping patterns are a specific signature of her work. Although appreciating the beauty in the effects of the natural water drips, Carmen takes control of the composition by manipulating and nurturing each one.

Carmen also possesses a strong passion for community and social work and views Art as a communicative medium by which to evoke compassionate thinking and stimulate change. She is an active member of the Arts community and is involved in many fundraising initiatives. Although never formally studying Fine Arts, Carmen attended various Art schools including The Vancouver Film School and Emily Carr University of Art and Design, for Graphic Design and Film studies.
