About

Barry was born and grew up in a part of London called Shepherds Bush until he got married when he moved to Middlesex. After completing 3 years at Queen Elizabeth College at London University he accepted a position at Unilever Research helping to pioneer new photographic techniques for various research projects. Although his time at Unilever produced a competent photographer (albeit a somewhat technical and scientific one), he was frustrated and thought he could do better in a proper business environment and felt that a fundamental change in his career path might open up new opportunities so he embarked on a 2 year business management course. Since then, he's had a number of positions primarily in the motor business spanning a wide spectrum of activities, culminating as fleet and leasing manager for a major motor manufacturer. He formed his own vehicle sales company in 1986 and in 1988 formed a vehicle management partnership and successfully ran both for a further fifteen years. It was however becoming increasingly apparent that he had spent most of his life doing business and not enough time doing leisure and pleasure, so in 2003 he took the plunge and retired early.
Barry had dabbled with painting in the past and, although he enjoyed it, he never progressed with it because he didn't believe he had the skill to portray what he wanted and never had the time to learn. It was after he retired early and rekindled his interest in photography, with the emergence of 'digital', that his interest in the relationship between texture and colour and, the effects each has on the other started to fascinate him again. Much of his work now focuses on this fascination which he believes are the two main constituents of any picture (colour and texture). "Much of the pleasure in making a picture" he says "is in trying to produce a particular effect which is significant enough to generate a reaction from the viewer. I believe every picture needs to produce a reaction irrespective of what that reaction is, otherwise it's visually worthless. "I will use almost any medium in order to achieve the effect I'm trying to portray and, won't be satisfied until I've got it absolutely right". Barry says his pictures don’t contain messages or make statements, “my pictures are for looking at and enjoying, thus allowing the viewers imagination to go where it wants to go without being pushed or prodded by me.”Barry now has an increasing number of corporate and personal clients who collect his pictures which are full of colour and detail, always interesting and, sometimes surprising. Above are a selection of Barry's pictures, if you click any one of them a larger version will appear.
