My work is nothing if not peculiar and eccentric. It does not rest conformably within a single medium but skips erratically among drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video and sound. The creation of my works even at times necessitates the invention of entirely new tools and techniques. I have an ad hoc approach to materials, finding inspiration in the wealth of discarded objects found in the vicinity of my studio. Stylistically, my work displays little continuity and cannot easily be broken down into categorically periods. Unpredictability and inventiveness are a large part of what has fuel my work. Yet these characteristics have also made it hard to pin down and have endowed me with an almost outsider status. Unique as my art may be, the work clearly belongs to its age and the works are engaged with the timeliest concerns of contemporary artistic practice.
Angel Axioma Alcala III was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico in 1985. A graduate of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, He is currently earning his MFA at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Axioma is known for creating complex sculptural systems through surprisingly simple means. His works are pieced together from bits of electrical hardware and several found objects. Axiomas fascination with materials and movement can also be seen in Spinning Moribund Bird, a work in which the artist turned a bird in a jar into a spinning machine. The source of inspiration for many of Axiomas pieces has been the re-imagining of found materials and what it means to make art. In 2008 the artist created a diverse series of painting that concentrated on incorporating other marginal interest, and later made a series of works he incorporated found elements to the work. These works reveal Axiomas obsession with materiality, ambiguity, and the assimilation of scientific systems of knowledge for aesthetic purposes. His artistic mission has been no less ambitious than an attempt to represent the entire universe and the structures of knowledge and belief that we use to understand and visualize it. Axiomas projects (continually expanding and evolving) stems from his imagination, and scientific elements and principles. Axiomas paintings delineate the human interaction as well as the attempts and limits of human consciousness to comprehend its vastness. Axiomas work deals with the idea of information being on the surface, and information is also the subject of his work. Although often described as a painter, Axioma creates works on paper, floor-to-wall installations, freestanding sculpture, web sites, and short stories, which tie his sprawling works together into a narrative structure. Collecting and building is central to his work. He collects his materials so that images can be use; taken apart, recycled, re-shaped, and transformed into art. The ongoing works that Axioma calls an endless experiment are his works, which he destroys and reuses the supports and parts to create new works. Axioma has participated in exhibitions in the United States and abroad. Angel Axioma Alcala III resides in San Antonio.,…Read More
