Inscriptions are a favorite device in Parker’s work. But here again, these elements may float or attach to a form that is unstable within the pictorial environment. The words themselves, in true Duchampian fashion, may be ambiguous, gratuitous or misleading. Some seem intentionally banal, but still compel attention since we are always inclined to unlock such clues to find the painting’s meaning.
