Untitled Patrick Swayze, is an open-ended sculptural suggestion that lends itself to the iconic shapes that inspire me, and are often the starting point for many of my projects. I use familiar objects and images because they have an internal intrinsic logic. By reconfiguring or juxtaposing these objects, and strategizing with their physicality as well as context, allows me to invite a re evaluation of specific objects and themes. A solid abstraction of a sheet ghost costume becomes a shuttle cock becomes a mountain becomes R2D2 becomes a tampon becomes a space ship becomes a tissue becomes a Popsicle becomes an erection under the sheets. Object association is one way we instinctively negotiate the world, “oh I see, it’s a …” And in this way I hope to make work that is inclusive, and pose an invitation for expanded interpretation and consideration of the object itself. Presentation and placement play a significant role, as they are often key in influencing the perception of different layers of possible meaning. In this way a degree of complexity and sophistication can be deployed alongside the more exaggerated character and amusing nature of the pieces themselves.
