Nicodean Apparatus 3 is part of my Geometric Apparatus series that are designed to test our notions of beauty in complex geometric forms. The twisting shapes of the wood become incomprehensible using euclidean notation so this device is designed to provide an antipositivist, abstract knowledge of how these geometries affect us emotionally. It is a wooden armature that supports 12 fully operational and tunable guitar type strings. Sitting within the guitar type strings are a series of ceramic ear trumpets that contain lights activated by vibrations through the armature. Each string is attached at one end to its own tuning peg and at the other to a brass paddle that allows the viewer to interact and to affect the tension and tuning directly.
