About The Artwork

The men-with-wigs are the members of the Huli tribe. It is the most famous famous tribe of Papua New Guinea. They are called like that because they make wigs from their hair. They live close to Tari city in the center of the Papua New Guinea on the top of the Highlands. Most of the hulis are civilized but a part of them still lives a traditional life. For their singsings (the local names for the big events) the men come back to their indigenous customs. For these occasions, even the city of Tari is suddenly filled with aborigines dressed in short skirts and traditional wigs richly decorated with feathers. They paint their faces, usually with yellow, red, and white decorations like you can see on the picture. Hulis are warriors. At the beginning of the year 2010, the tribal fights even start to bother the economical development. Police was deployed the Southern Highlands province to contain an ongoing tribal war which has troubled the ExxonMobil gas pipeline project. The operations of were badly affected by the fights which started in jaunary 2010. The fights caused 11 deaths and the destruction of more than 270 houses.

Born in 1964, Eric Lafforgue lives in Toulouse, France. Ever since he was young, he has been fascinated by far away countries and travelling, and spent some time in Africa, unknowingly retracing Monfried and Joseph Kesselʼs footsteps when he was 10 years old in Djibouti, Ethiopia and Yemen. He started taking photographs in 2006, publishing his pictures on the internet, after leaving the world of multimedia editing in which he was involved for over 15 years. The following year, after a trip to Papua New Guinea, Kubik took notice of his work and published a book containing his photos. Soon after, magazines from all over the world began using his work for illustrations on North Korea, the tribes of Ethiopia, etc. He then joined the european leading agency RAPHO. In 2008, after 2 years of activity in the world of photography, his work on the people of Papua is displayed at the prestigious VISA photojournalism festival in Perpignan. Eric Lafforgue spends most of his time travelling the globe to share his encounters, through the perception of an ethnologist and the heart of an artist, privileging the regions or populations in danger and less usually visited countries. Eric Lafforgue uses Hasselblad H4D-50, Leica M6, Canon Eos D1 MarkIII, 5D M3 .
