This is the most recent large-scale painting I have done.

In this piece of work, I have taken the vessel motif that I have employed before, and further reduced it into abstract forms (or fragments), in order to achieve the essential qualities I work for in my paintings - a sense of powerfulness and bizarreness.

The piece is also a combination of everything I have been exploring in the past year. By using repetition to abstract the vessel motif and as a means to reduce the identity of the vessels, I hope to raise the question of the significance of cultural-specificity in artworks, and encourage but also undermine the viewer's ability to making meaningful associations; thus, also questioning the issue of the perception, assumptions, and prejudices in viewing artworks. It is also a piece that allowed me to engage further in the painterly process, to work quickly (abstract strokes) and also more slowly (where forms from South-East Asian culture are introduced) in the same composition, and to bring back 'space' into my painting, which has been often neglected in previous paintings that consisted of more excessive amounts of accumulated brush marks.
