In this series of paintings my main concerns are aspects of imperfection and spirituality in relation to urban decay and the aerial landscape. I am trying to express a non-hierarchical spirituality, linked to a need for human affiliation and material humility.
The Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi has been a great influence upon my work and shares many of the ethical qualities that I try to express. Wabi-sabi is the beauty of things rustic, impermanent and incomplete. The concept derives from the Japanese tea ceremony - whilst in the tea hut everyone is equal regardless of social or intellectual status.
