About The Artwork

Medium: oil on canvas Year Created: 2000 In the Order Letter "Deus lo Vult" (No. 63/2000) has Cfr. A. Goergen on a recent work by Cfr. Eibern VH on shape and meaning to our Ordensinsignie, pointed out the so-called Jerusalem Cross (published in the Festschrift for Cfr. KJ Elm, 1999). This investigation led to the understanding of this sign as an indication of the scale in a rectangle or square heavenly Jerusalem after the Apocalypse of John (Chapter 21:16), ie, to an architectural metaphor. This was similar to already used to be so seen, in the understanding of the basic plan of Byzantine churches, where domes are associated with each other crosswise. A young artist recently has this idea as a basis for a composition: bright red fabric highlight the pattern of the Jerusalem Cross from a seemingly endless sequence of ordered square wall lines. In this reaction, the cross appears as a spatial concretization of a cosmic context. The symbolic content of the image can be illustrated with some verses from the famous "Carmen de Trini-tate" (5th century), with which this, the world detected the cross shape is interpreted: "Why is the sublime form of the Cross has such a shape, Can the adorable characters clearly: What tells him in four different directions, pointing to the master of the world and the angels. His dominion extends over all crosses zones and horizons. " By Prof. Dr. Victor H. Elbern, appeared in the Order Letter 65 / 1, 2001, page 1 of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem
