‘Untitled’

The orange here is called burnt sienna, one of the first pigments to be used by humans, and is found in many cave paintings. I also used charcoal, again another primitive medium and worked into the picture with my fingers (as well as brushes and cloths).

The style was intentionally that of a cave-painting with rough patches of colour and line used throughout.

Sienna is a beautiful colour but on its own is too fiery and overpowering. To avoid an over-garish painting it had to be balanced with some carefully placed cooler colours.

Composition
The lines and colours have been placed in a sort of cross, pulling the viewer’s eyes to the centre of the painting, the focal point – the lower back area. This area is where most of the detail is, the exterior parts of the painting are intentionally more blurry and undefined.
