View of Paris suburbs viewed from Sacre Coeur. A grey misty day made the view hazy and flattened. It struck me that the rooftops had an abstract quality and that if painted without detail or surface variation this would be enhanced. The result is a series of interlocking impasto geometric shapes in muted tones of blue, brown, grey and white. A palette of only three colours was used in the production of this piece. Blocks of colour have been carefully applied so that they abut each other without blending to create sharp contrasts. Oil paint on canvas over a shallow edged stretcher type frame. Dried for six months before varnishing.
