2012, a showcase exhibition of his work as one of SA's contemporary
masters. "Eryn" (charcoal) and "Madame Bink" (oil) debut was a raging
sucess winning BOTH the gold first prize and Peoples Choice Award

Kristian Mumford’s intimate, magical portraits of women are the result of an artistic development during which he’s created everything from bas'ie electronic music and video art to gardens fit for a princess. Enigmatically, often essentially, those influences come together in fine oil paintings whose visual delights evoke those of Old Masters at only an age of 29. In the South Australian artist’s work, characters occupy mysterious environments that ooze romance and a playful inquisitiveness that tells the stories of man and women. These figures some nude, some draped in lush textiles and often sporting expressionist makeup under gleaming headdresses could just as easily be in an alternate reality. His creative process suggest so, often working in no particular reason, although the colors and form are true to nature, and his aptitude to create and express feelings are astonishing.
Mumford’s canvases sometimes evoke watercolors, with much of each composition given over to gentle, deep tones. His bolder hues – glowing Australian greens, searing cad yellows, refreshing tasman blues – seem especially striking against unfinished one hue scheme backdrops that melt away at the edges. Mumford organizes space, color and focus to draw viewers into each mysterious character, seeking out the eyes and expressions of these players in an unknowable part to life we humans often associate with what we do know about love. Mumford’s beauties let us feel age old truths and love stories.
