About The Artwork
The composition follows the established model, except for Mary shown in “orans” position. We see Archangel Gabriel appearing in haste to announce to Mary that she will become the Mother of God’s Son. The preexisting Christ is shown in the heavenly vault above. The text delivered by St. Gabriel is in Greek: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee” (Luke 1:28). Mary responds, “be it done to me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). The Hebrew text in the opened book is “Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son” (Isaiah 7:14)
