A surreal dream-like painting showing the Devil (Rome) urinating into a fish tank (amphitheatre arena) causing the big yellow fish (Christianity) to feed on a ladybird hooked at the end of a fishing rod being held by a winged cartoony human eagle (baiting & torture by a gladiator), surrounded by various child-like demons (Paganism) cheering in the audience. This whole scene is supposed to symbolically represent the persecution of the early Christians by the Romans. I choose stark, high toned, primary and secondary colours, and I use them discordantly to create that 'other worldly dream-like' effect. I use an amphitheatre-esk room as a phenomenal space or stage, to place these odd characters in. These unearthly beings are personified, coded expressions of emotions, along with Christian and Roman archetypes. In my work I'm trying to achieve a unique expressive form of surrealism fused with symbolism as the vehicle to convey this message from my subconscious. I call it Expressive Symbol-Surrealism.
