For the series of paintings I began with an altered version of the classic quotation from French philosopher Rene Descartes, "Je pense, donc je suis" or "I think, therefore I am". The amended title I chose, "J'attends, donc j'attends" translated as "I await, therefore I await", is an attempt to connect two ideas that share a similar discordance. The title of the series suggests the listlessness of an image and its dependa\ence on the viewer's knowledge base to draw conclusions about the work from their own perspective. It also maintains a stance from the work itself, alone with embedded clues, anticipating involvement from the viewer. The more that is revealed as the clues come together the more the viewer is drawn in. The viewer is often looked at as the "other" or lesser important partner in the artistic coterie, but is an essential consort in unwrapping the contextual layers of the work.
